The Nordic Beach Polo Championships are set to debut on May 14–15, 2026, at Tylösand Beach in Halmstad, Sweden. We spoke with Christian Green, the event’s organizer, about how the concept was born, the challenges of preparing a professional polo field on sand, and the vision for this new tradition in the Nordic region.
How was the concept for the tournament born?
The idea emerged from a broader strategy to grow polo across Scandinavia by creating new and engaging formats. The goal is to bring the sport to new audiences, increase awareness and deliver memorable experiences where spectators can enjoy polo up close in a relaxed and accessible setting. Tylösand, with its coastline, atmosphere and beach culture, offered the perfect backdrop to combine sport, hospitality and lifestyle in a visually spectacular format. At the same time, the organizers saw an opportunity to establish a new Nordic polo tradition and make the sport approachable for those who may have never seen it before.
What is the process like for preparing the polo field?
Building a polo arena on sand is a highly technical process. The surface must be cleaned, levelled, watered and compacted to ensure safe and consistent footing for the horses. Specialists in equestrian arenas and local operators work together to shape the field to professional standards. Beyond the playing surface, fencing, sponsor branding, pony lines, hospitality areas and logistics are all constructed directly on the beach. Because conditions can shift quickly with weather, tides and sand moisture, continuous maintenance is required throughout the event. Safety for horses and players remains the top priority at every stage.
What new plans or innovations are being introduced this year?
As the first edition of the Nordic Beach Polo Championships, the entire concept is new. The ambition is to build this into an annual event featuring teams and players from across Scandinavia. The organizers are focused on creating a modern polo experience where sport, lifestyle, hospitality and beach culture merge seamlessly. Guests will be able to watch competitive polo from close range while enjoying the atmosphere of Tylösand. Making polo approachable is a key goal—many people are curious about the sport but rarely get the chance to experience it this intimately.
When will the event take place?
The Nordic Beach Polo Championships will be held on May 14–15, 2026, at Tylösand Beach in Halmstad, Sweden.
