Azerbaiyán es un país con una fuerte tradición ecuestre. El juego deportivo tradicional del país conocido como chovgan, ha sido jugado por jinetes durante siglos.
El chovgan es un juego tradicional de equitación que se juega entre dos equipos montados en los caballos de Karabakh. Chovgan es el predecesor del polo moderno.
David Lagomarsino nos cuenta que: “Se está jugando el campeonato mundial de Chovgan, que es un deporte ancestral, justamente en esta zona donde dicen que nació este deporte, bastante similar al polo pero bastante más rudo”.
Además agrega que: “Las reglas y la forma de jugarlo es un poco más bruto, si bien tiene sus reglas y demás, no es un deporte para todo el mundo como lo es el polo que tiene un poco de sofisticación”.
En 2013, la UNESCO decidió incluir el juego del «chovgan» en su Lista del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial.
Lagomarsino nos cuenta que: “En este caso íbamos a traer un equipo de argentina al final decidieron de la Federación Internacional del cual soy parte, porque soy el representante en sudamérica y ya se unió gente de Chile, de Uruguay y estoy hablando también con gente de Bolivia, que tienen ganas de sumarse y ser parte de la Federación”.
Sobre los planes a futuro cuenta que: “La idea es que cada país tenga su representante y desde sudamérica, en un futuro, traer o presentar equipos y ver de cómo lo podemos adaptar a lo que nosotros estamos un poco más acostumbrados y de esa forma que se haga un poco más internacional el deporte”
LA GUAPEADA Y UN CONVENIO INTERNACIONAL
“Desde La Guapeada junto con la Federación que cuenta con 40 países involucrados, hicimos un convenio donde podemos recibir a los equipos participantes de todos estos lugares para ayudarlos a progresar en el deporte, que tiene mucha relación con el polo, así que ellos entienden bien que mejorando en el polo van a mejorar en este otro deporte. Por ejemplo, en Kazajistán, Ubekistan o Azerbaiyán juegan los dos deportes. Y esa es un poco la idea de hacer crecer el deporte de compartir cosas buenas con La Guapeada y tratar de sumar a la Federación de Chovgan”.
Entre los equipos que participaron estuvieron algunos equipos europeos. Estaba Malta, Polonia y Alemania. Me tocó ser de juez junto con otra persona de Hungría y también referíamos los partidos. Si bien por ahí ya lo venía estudiando un poco y demás, vivirlo desde adentro estuvo bueno para aprender muy bien cuál es la idea y tratar de ayudar.
Por último, David nos cuenta que: “Si bien es bastante más rudo que el polo digamos hay que tratar de promocionarlo un poco y la forma para mí la forma de eso es cuidando bien a los caballos, cuidando bien a los jugadores y que sea un deporte seguro para todos”.
Azerbaijan is a country with a strong equestrian tradition. The country’s traditional sports game, known as chovgan, has been played by riders for centuries.

In 2013, UNESCO decided to include the game of «chovgan» in its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Lagomarsino tells us that: «In this case we were going to bring a team from Argentina in the end they decided on the International Federation of which I am part, because I am the representative in South America and people from Chile, from Uruguay have already joined and I am also talking to people from Bolivia, who want to join and be part of the Federation.»
About the plans for the future he says that: «The idea is that each country has its representative and from South America, in the future, bring or present teams and see how we can adapt it to what we are a little more accustomed to and in that way that the sport becomes a little more international»
LA GUAPEADA AND AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT
«From La Guapeada together with the Federation that has 40 countries involved, we made an agreement where we can receive the participating teams from all these places to help them progress in the sport, which has a lot to do with polo, so they understand well that improving in polo they will improve in this other sport. For example, in Kazakhstan, Ubekistan or Azerbaijan they play both sports. And that’s a bit of the idea of growing the sport of sharing good things with La Guapeada and trying to join the Chovgan Federation.»
Among the teams that participated were some European teams. There was Malta, Poland and Germany. I had to be a judge along with another person from Hungary and we also referred to the parties. Although I was already studying it a little and so on, living it from the inside was good to learn very well what the idea is and try to help.
Finally, David tells us that: «Although it is much rougher than polo, let’s say you have to try to promote it a little and the way for me the way of that is taking good care of the horses, taking good care of the players and that it is a safe sport for everyone.»
