Uzbekistan: The Rise of a New Polo Nation – An Interview with Sarvar Djalalov

In recent years, Uzbekistan has emerged as one of the most dynamic new players in the global polo landscape. To understand this rapid evolution, PoloHUB spoke with Sarvar Djalalov, Vice President for International Relations of the Uzbekistan Polo Federation, who shared insights into the country’s progress, challenges, and long‑term ambitions.

A young federation with accelerating growth

Although polo in Uzbekistan is still in its early stages, its development has been remarkably fast. Since the creation of the Uzbekistan Polo Federation in 2020, and its subsequent recognition as a full member of the Federation of International Polo (FIP), the sport has transitioned from a niche pursuit into a structured and increasingly visible discipline.

Today, the Federation oversees 12 professional teams across 12 regions, supported by the National Guard of Uzbekistan through regional equestrian schools. Participation is rising, new competitions are being introduced—including snow polo—and interest among young athletes continues to grow. A women’s league is also taking shape, signaling a broader and more inclusive future for the sport.

This momentum is deeply connected to Uzbekistan’s equestrian heritage. Traditional horseback sports such as chovgan, considered an ancestor of modern polo, have long been part of the country’s cultural identity. Modern polo is now building on that legacy, strengthened by government investment in facilities, horse breeding, and international partnerships. A key advantage is the Karabair horse, a native breed known for its endurance and suitability for polo at this stage of development.

“We are in a foundational but accelerating phase,” Djalalov explains. “The institutional support and cultural connection uto horses give us a strong base to grow.”

Central Asia: challenges and opportunities for emerging polo nations

Developing polo in Central Asia comes with a unique set of challenges. Infrastructure, trained horses, and experienced coaches are still limited, and the cost of entering the sport remains high compared to traditional equestrian disciplines. Public perception also plays a role, as polo is often seen as an elite activity.

However, the opportunities are equally significant. Central Asia has a centuries‑old horse culture, and Uzbekistan is leveraging that heritage to build a modern sporting ecosystem. Government programs aimed at developing equestrian sports are accelerating progress, and interest among younger generations is expanding the sport’s future talent pool.

“Central Asia is not starting from zero,” Djalalov notes. “We are transforming a deep-rooted horse tradition into a modern international sport.”

A vision for the future: Uzbekistan on the global polo map

Looking ahead, Uzbekistan aims to position itself as a regional hub for polo in Central Asia and a competitive presence in the international arena.

The Federation’s strategic goals include:

  • Expanding grassroots development through youth academies
  • Strengthening infrastructure and horse‑breeding programs
  • Hosting international tournaments to attract global attention
  • Deepening partnerships with FIP and other national federations

As a full member of the international governing body, Uzbekistan already has the platform to participate in global competitions and exchange expertise with established polo nations. The long‑term ambition is clear: to evolve from an emerging polo country into a respected and influential contributor to the sport worldwide.

A nation on the rise

Uzbekistan’s rapid progress reflects a blend of tradition, ambition, and strategic investment. With strong institutional backing, a growing player base, and a clear international vision, the country is poised to become one of the most exciting new chapters in the global polo story.
