Auckland Polo Club Announces Debut of Standing Rock Fair Play Award at New Zealand Polo Open

Auckland Polo Club, Clevedon, New Zealand – The Auckland Polo Club (APC) is thrilled to announce that the rising Standing Rock Fair Play Award will make its New Zealand debut at the prestigious New Zealand Polo Open, set to be held in February 2025. This collaboration between APC and the Standing Rock Polo Team, led by Swiss patron Philipp Müller, underscores a shared commitment to promoting the highest values of sportsmanship, respect, and equine welfare.

The Standing Rock Fair Play Award, first introduced in the British polo community and now recognised internationally, honours the team that exemplifies exceptional conduct both on and off the field. It reflects the core principles of polo: camaraderie, integrity, and discipline. This year, the award will be presented to the team that demonstrates the best sportsmanship during the New Zealand Polo Open.

A Decade-Long Commitment to Fair Play

In a historic partnership, Standing Rock has pledged to sponsor the Fair Play Award at the New Zealand Polo Open for the next ten years. During this time, the award will be presented annually at the tournament’s final ceremony.

Philipp Müller, Director of Standing Rock Polo, expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone:
“Polo is not just about competition—it’s about upholding a culture of respect, fairness, and dedication to equine welfare. The Fair Play Award represents these ideals, and we’re excited to see them celebrated at the New Zealand Polo Open.”

Award Criteria and Evaluation

The recipient of the Standing Rock Fair Play Award will be chosen based on exemplary sportsmanship, respect for umpires, and discipline throughout the tournament. Specific criteria include:

  • Sportsmanship: Respecting opponents and fair play.
  • Respect for Umpires: Adherence to umpire decisions without dissent, and maintaining professionalism in all interactions.
  • Discipline: Displaying punctuality, appropriate conduct, and commitment to pony welfare on and off the field.

Umpires will score teams after every match, ensuring consistent evaluation. The Auckland Polo Club will oversee the data collection and calculations, ensuring a transparent process.

A Legacy of Excellence

The exclusive Standing Rock Fair Play Award trophy will feature the names of its winners, symbolising the perpetual celebration of fairness and integrity in polo. APC Executive Director Lucy Ainsley commented on the partnership, highlighting the significance of this award in fostering a spirit of respect and sportsmanship within the polo community.
