Standing Rock: Tradition, Fair Play and Global Ambition

In an exclusive interview, Philipp Mueller, founder of the Standing Rock Polo Team, shares the inspiration behind the team’s identity, the importance of fair play in polo, and the goals for the upcoming season.

The Inspiration

Originally named after Mueller’s family business, Wascosa, the team was reborn as Standing Rock Polo Team after the company was sold. Inspired by Native American culture and values, Mueller and David Morley developed the new identity guided by the Seven Lakota Values: generosity, respect, kinship, compassion, fortitude, wisdom and spirituality.

At the end of 2024, Mueller visited Native American Reservations in South Dakota, including the Standing Rock Reservation, to learn firsthand about indigenous communities, their history, and their way of life. This cultural immersion continues to shape the team’s philosophy, from horse welfare and sportsmanship to philanthropy through the Standing Rock Foundation.

Fair Play

Mueller recalls a moment at Guards Polo Club when an opposing player picked up a dropped mallet for his rival. That simple act of respect sparked the idea of the Standing Rock Fair Play Award, now presented in the UK, France, New Zealand and Australia.

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mueller explains. “Fair play and sportsmanship make the game more enjoyable for everyone—players, umpires, patrons and spectators alike.”

Next Steps

Looking ahead, Standing Rock’s ambitions for the 2026 season are clear:

  • Learn from past mistakes and improve in every area.
  • Return strong to the UK season.
  • Compete for trophies in the 8-goal, 12-goal and 18-goal categories.

A Global Vision

Standing Rock is more than a polo team—it is a movement that blends cultural respect, sporting excellence, and international ambition. Guided by timeless values, Mueller’s vision continues to expand the reach of polo while honoring traditions that inspire unity and integrity on and off the field.
